23 July 2020 – International Students

To all our International Students,

To all our International Students,

Because of an increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Victoria, Stay at Home restrictions are now in place in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire. There are only four reasons to go out: shopping for food and essential items, to provide care or seek medical treatment, to exercise, or to work or study if you can’t do it from home. Your support is invaluable in controlling the spread of coronavirus.

If you live in highrise apartments or with others in a share house, remain vigilant and protect yourselves and those around you by following hygiene advice. If you are leaving home, you must wear a face covering. Remember to also follow physical distancing guidelines. Information on how to stay safe and well is available in multiple languages and can be found at: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/how-stay-safe-and-well-covid-19

Coronavirus (COVID-19) testing

Getting tested for coronavirus (COVID-19) is considered medical treatment and it is one of the four reasons you can leave home. If you or your family have symptoms, no matter how mild, please get tested. The test is free for everyone including international students and has no impact on your student visa. You should bring your student ID as your form of identification. Detailed information about getting tested can be found at www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/getting-tested-coronavirus-covid-19 or call the Coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398. If you need an interpreter, call TIS National on 131 450.

What to do if you have symptoms or a positive result

Your doctor or the clinic / test site where you were tested will contact you by phone or SMS to tell you your results, regardless if it is positive or negative. If you have symptoms, you must return home immediately after the test and remain in self-isolation until you receive your test result. If separate quarantine accommodation is necessary, this is free and at no cost to you.

Support for international students

All medical care for international students to treat confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases will be free if not covered by your Overseas Student Health Cover. International students in forced isolation are eligible for emergency care packages and may be eligible for $1500 payments for lost work due to isolation.

Study Melbourne is dedicated to supporting our international student community during this challenging time. Please refer to the Study Melbourne coronavirus hub on www.studymelbourne.vic.gov.au/coronavirus or contact the Study Melbourne Student Centre on 1800 056 449 for information on additional assistance available.

Stay Safe.
